For many years, West Hill has faced some of Toronto’s highest youth unemployment rates, alongside ongoing community challenges such as youth violence and limited access to opportunities. However, initiatives like this Job Fair continue to demonstrate that through employment, mentorship, capacity building, and meaningful community partnerships, West Hill can become a safer, stronger, and more prosperous community for everyone.

The West Hill Community Association partnered with the Toronto Community Improvement Program (TCIP) to host this impactful event, bringing together employers, organizations, and community stakeholders committed to empowering local residents through access to jobs and career opportunities.

The event welcomed an impressive turnout of job seekers and applicants, with over 600 participants

 in attendance. Attendees had the opportunity to connect directly with employers, explore career pathways, receive guidance, and access valuable employment resources.

The Job Fair also featured the participation of key community and government partners, including representatives from the City of Toronto and the Office of the Member of Parliament (MP), whose presence reinforced the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing unemployment and strengthening communities.

Events like this reflect the power of partnership and community-driven action in creating real opportunities and long-term impact for young people and families in West Hill.

The Toronto Communities Improvement Program (TCIP) proudly participated in a high-impact Black History Month event in Toronto, organized by the Westhill Community Association  focused on empowering Black-owned businesses, supporting Black entrepreneurs, and strengthening community development initiatives.

This Black History Month celebration in Toronto was designed to highlight and support Black-owned and Black-led organizations, while creating opportunities for economic empowerment, collaboration, and community growth.

The event served as a strategic platform to:

* Promote Black entrepreneurship in Toronto

* Increase visibility for Black-owned businesses

* Encourage partnerships among community leaders and organizations

* Strengthen support systems for sustainable growth

Key Discussions: Supporting Black Entrepreneurs and Organizations

The event featured insightful discussions on how to scale Black-led businesses and organizations. Key topics included:

* Strategies to increase visibility for Black entrepreneurs

* Access to funding opportunities, mentorship programs, and business partnerships

* Tools and resources for business growth and scalability

* The role of community events in amplifying Black voices beyond Black History Month

These conversations emphasized the importance of long-term economic empowerment and ecosystem support for Black communities.

Event Highlights: Networking and Community Engagement

The event created a vibrant space for networking in Toronto, bringing together entrepreneurs, business owners, community leaders, and stakeholders.

Attendees were able to:

* Build valuable business and community connections

* Exchange ideas and opportunities for collaboration

* Celebrate Black excellence and innovation in a relaxed, engaging environment

TCIP’s Role in the Event

TCIP played a key role not only as a participant but also as an event organizer. The organization contributed to the planning and execution of the event, ensuring a seamless and impactful experience for all attendees.

While TCIP did not deliver a formal stage presentation, their involvement was instrumental in driving the event’s success and overall impact.

A Collaborative Community Effort

This Toronto Black History Month event was made possible by the THE WESTHILL COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION to advance community empowerment, business growth, and economic inclusion.

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to:

* Supporting Black-led initiatives

* Creating sustainable opportunities for Black entrepreneurs

* Building stronger, more connected communities

Food insecurity is no longer a distant issue it is a growing reality affecting people across all economic levels. From low-income households to the average working class and even some higher-income families, the ability to consistently put food on the table is becoming increasingly uncertain.

In 2024 alone, an estimated 10 million people in Toronto and across Canada struggled to afford basic meals approximately 1 in 4 Canadians. This is despite the country producing more than enough food to feed its population. The challenge is no longer availability it is affordability, driven largely by the continued rise in food prices.

For immigrants, the issue is even more complex. Access to familiar, local, or indigenous foods remains limited, creating both nutritional and cultural gaps. At the same time, food banks, once a safety net for the most vulnerable are now overwhelmed. A growing number of users includes not only those in urgent need but also individuals and families who would traditionally be considered financially stable.

These critical issues and more were explored at the Food Summit held on April 24, 2026, in Toronto.

Our Presence at the Summit

The Westhill Community Assoociation, well represented by The TorontoCIP showed up with a clear purpose: to be part of the solution. We were honored to engage with changemakers, advocates, and organizations committed to addressing food insecurity and building sustainable systems that work for everyone.

The conversations were urgent, the insights were powerful, and the call to action was clear—change is needed, and it requires collective effort.

Looking Ahead

Food insecurity is not just a policy issue; it is a human issue. Solving it will require collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to equity—especially for underserved communities.

TorontoCIP remains dedicated to driving these conversations forward and contributing to meaningful, lasting solutions.

Building Skills, Confidence and Community

The camp was designed to use baseball and other fun activities as a powerful tool for engagement and recreation. Beyond the sport itself, our goal was to introduce young participants to the values of team work, sportsmanship and healthy living. We created a safe and inclusive environment where children could build confidence, form friendship and stay physically active throughout the summer while experiencing the excitement and culture of baseball.

The camp welcomed 22 children, with participants ranging from ages 7 to 13. Each child was actively engaged, ensuring a personalized and inclusive experience for all.

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS are Toronto's Major League Baseball team. Through the JAYS CARE FOUNDATION, they deliver impactful programs such as the Blue Jays Baseball Academy and Rookie League.

These initiatives use baseball as a platform to promote youth development, recreation and community engagement across Canada. Our camp brought this same spirit to life through fun, baseball inspired activities.

The camp delivered meaningful benefits across multiple areas of development:

• Physical development: Improved coordination, fitness and motor skills through structured drills and active play 
• Social skills: Encouraged team work, communication and fair play through group activities 
• Confidence building: Every child participated fully, every one had the opportunity to hit, throw and contribute
• Sense of community: Participants felt connected through the spirit of baseball
• Healthy recreation: Provided a refreshing, screen free environment that encouraged outdoor activity and engagement.

Participants engaged in a wide range of baseball themed and recreational activities including;

• Throwing and Catching drills - Partner toss, relay throws.
• Hitting Stations - Tee balls, soft toss and mini home run challenges
• Base Running Games - Relay races and interactive tag games
• Fielding Exercise: Ground ball challenges and pop-fly practice
• Mini Scrimmages: Short, structured games inspired by Blue Jays rules
• Team-building Activities - Dugout cheers and team identity creation

This camp was more than just a sports program, it was a platform for growth, connection and fun. By combining structured baseball activities with a supportive environment, we were able to create a memorable experience that positively impacted every participant.
